Information & Communication Technology (ICT) is one of the most important tools to achieve economic prosperity of a country through improving the management and efficiency in every sphere of life. The experience of the developed and emerging economies supports the above notion. Moreover, expanding and diversifying the use of ICTs to establish a transparent, responsive and accountable government; develop skilled human resources; enhance social equity; ensure cost-effective delivery of citizen-services through public-private partnerships; and support the national goal of becoming a middle-income country within ten years and join the ranks of the developed countries of the world within thirty years.
Bangladesh already connected to the information super highway as fiber optic backbone within the country and the fiber optic submarine cable connection is completed. In the new era we are amidst a digital communication system many thousand times more efficient, speedy and powerful. ICT has accelerated the pace of globalization. At the heart of the startling development in some of the developing countries there lies ICT. Countries having access to and control over information will dominate the world economically and politically.
The present government under the leadership of the honorable prime minister Jononetry Sheikh Hasina already declared that Bangladesh will be a middle income country by the year 2021. The country will mark the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence, while the year 2020 will be the hundredth anniversary of the birth of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman where poverty will be drastically reduced; where our citizens will be able to meet every basic need and where development will be on fast track, with ever-increasing rates of growth.
Appropriate measures to face the challenges of globalization is already undertaken, including developing commercial agriculture, use of genetic engineering methods and development of nonagricultural sector in villages. In order to increase agricultural production, special emphasis has been placed on modernization of agriculture, innovation of technology and expansion of facilities for research in agriculture.
